The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Betty Blankenship can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Laura (Horstkamp) Cullinane

My oldest child is getting ready to begin kindergarten next year, and in musing about the school bus I was thinking about Mrs. Blankenship today - I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was my bus driver from my first days of school well into my high school years. I was one of the first to be picked up and last to be dropped off, and over those years I was fascinated to hear bits of her life story. Silly memories, but as a child I greatly wanted to help wash the bus on the weekends (she said we could but it never actually happened) and attempted to crochet several door-handle covers which she would kindly try to use (they never came out quite right). I was one of the passengers on the bus with her for what was certainly the darkest day of her elementary school driving career and I have looked back on that day many times - she not only handled the events with admirable professionalism, she respected those of us on her bus that afternoon enough to tell us the truth of what had occurred that morning, which I appreciated very much at the time and fully realize the difficulty of even more now that I am an adult, as well as a teacher and a parent. No doubt her career gave her many stories to tell and her family and friends brought her many brighter memories. Mrs. Blankenship set the bar by which my children's bus drivers will be measured, and I will remember her fondly.
