Obituary for Dennis Thompson Sr.
Dennis C. Thompson Sr. was born in Arlington Va. on February 28th, 1946 only child of Robert Thompson & Jenny Sullivan. He married Patricia Ann Lowe on January 27th 1964. Together they welcomed into the world Dennis C. Jr, William Lee & and Catherine Marie. Dad and Mom celebrated 50 years of marriage before her passing in June of 2014.
Dad worked for the General Services Administration (GSA) for 41 years before retiring. He began his career as an elevator mechanic apprentice, worked his way to a tenured technician and then promoted to supervisory level. His responsibilities included servicing, installation and overhaul of government elevator/escalator units throughout Washington D.C. He shared many interesting stories of his time working in the White House, riding elevators with presidents starting with Johnson and ending with Clinton. I believe his favorite president stories were about Reagan. His code name among the elevator guys was “The Gorilla”. Late in his career, he moved to the coveted pre-retirement job of elevator inspector, a job that allowed him to come and go as he pleased.
Dad enjoyed traveling with Mom when not working. Beach trips, cruises and NASCAR events were the norm. He enjoyed coin collecting since he was a kid. His membership in the Yellow Dogs was one of his highest honors. He looked forward to the annual initiation of new members which lasted all weekend. His mechanical skills made him a “Jack of all Trades”. Primarily, his electrical skills allowed him to work side jobs which he enjoyed with other friends of similar skill sets.
He is survived by his three children Dennis Jr. (wife Brenda), Bill (wife Shannon) and Cathy; six grandchildren, Kirstie, Kyle, Amanda, Alex, Aly & Timmy (little “T”) and one great-grand child, Dominic.
