Obituary for Norma Annette Nelson
Norma A. Nelson, age 79, passed peacefully on Sunday, June 18, 2017 with family by her side at the Novant Prince William Hospital in Manassas, VA.
Norma was born on January 27, 1938 in Solon Springs, WI to Nels and Hanna (Toivanen) Westerlund.
A proud graduate of Solon Springs High School and the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Norma had a life-long love of music. She could play almost any instrument and loved playing the piano and organ. Norma spent many years teaching music in NM and WI, and was an organist for several churches in WI and TX. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting sweaters, weaving rugs, and spending time with her family and dogs. She was also a devoted San Antonio Spurs fan and watched every game possible.
Surviving Norma are her daughters Connie (Robert) Gilbert in Temple, TX and Karin (Sean) Linehan in Fairfax Station, VA; grandchildren Maria (Ronnie) Benolken, Danielle Linehan, and Michael Linehan; great-granddaughter Leanne McIver; sister Ruth Marie Muzzio in Superior, WI, and sister-in-law Catherine Westerlund in Duluth, MN.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Hannah Westerlund; her brothers Robert and William “Gus” Westerlund; and Sister Charlene Palo.
Many thanks to the staff at Five Star Home Health Care, First Light Home Health Care, and the Novant Prince William Hospital for the loving care they provided.
A celebration of Norma's life will be held in Solon Springs, WI later this summer.
Memorial donations may be made to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department.
