Colonel Edward Madison Condra, III, USMC, Ret., of Smithfield, Virginia, passed away October 3, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Judith S. Condra, children, Bryan Condra of Richmond, Virginia, and Amy Condra of Manassas, Virginia, stepchildren, Ann Beth Colston, her husband Mark Flack, Albert J. Resolute, III, and his wife, Anne. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Zoe, Marisa, Emma, Ruby, Cullen, and Tucker. He was recently predeceased by his sister, Linda “Sitter” Griffin.

Colonel Condra was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, into a military family. He graduated from the Philadelphia Museum College of Art where he won the William H. Ely Travel Award for Illustration. He also earned a Master of Science degree from Boston University. After graduation he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Following 26 years in the Marines, during which he served two tours in Vietnam, Colonel Condra became the Director of the MacArthur Memorial Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. During his years in the military he continued to produce a large body of commercial and fine art, to include more than 125 works in the official Marine Corps Art Collection.

Colonel Condra’s work has been shown in more than 25 solo exhibitions and nearly 200 group exhibitions. In 2002 he traveled to the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest to record military activities, and in 2004 he was an Artist in Residence in the Everglades National Park. In the spring of 2005 his work from that experience was exhibited at the park’s Visitors' Center where more than 21,000 visitors viewed the four-week show. In 2005, Condra was selected as a visiting artist for the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. He was affiliated with many art organizations and for years was an active participant in the development of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Ed will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.

A graveside service will be held October 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery.
