Obituary for Donald K. Rose

Donald K. Rose
Don Rose was a man who jumped completely and passionately in to everything he did in life. When he returned from his maritime service in WWII, the lady he loved (his future bride Pat) declined his proposal – so he joined the Air Force. The doctors told him he would never walk again after contracting Polio – so he built a cabin, raised a family, backpacked, waterskied and walked. His position as a salesman in the family business was not satisfying – so he quit, moved to Colorado and earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration and Doctorate in Economics. To earn his PhD, he had to become fluent in two languages – so he moved his family to Switzerland. He became the most demanding and popular professor of Economics at Montana State University. He had always dreamed about living on a sail boat – so he and his wife Pat (she eventually said “Yes”) sold everything they owned to buy a 36ft Ketch, and sailed the East Coast and Caribbean for two years. Don was employed by the State of Maryland’s Department of Economic and Community Development, a member of the US Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, an entrepreneur on South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island, an author, technical writer, shooting sports lover and Aurora Gun Club Member in Denver, Colorado, a scholar and philosopher……..and in between he was a loving husband and father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend.

Don was born in Idaho, passed away in Virginia. He was preceded in death by his brother Rodgers Rose, wife Patricia Rose, son KD Rose, and sister-in-law Hazel Rose. He is survived and remembered fondly by: his brother John David Rose and his wife Penny; his sister Margaret Knowlton and her husband David; his daughter Katherine Mayo and her husband Bill, his grandchildren Kenneth and Stephen Mayo; his grandson William Rose; his daughter-in-law Edie Grunwald, and his grandchildren Donald Rose and Patricia Rose; and many other cousins and friends.

The pain of these last years has ended. May Don finally rest in peace.
