Obituary for Catherine Gibbs Hicks (Rider)

On Sunday, December 3, 2017, Catherine Gibbs Hicks went to be with Jesus following a brief illness.

A native of Culpeper, Virginia, she met her husband, Rev. Harold L. Hicks, while in high school. Together, they served Methodist churches in Culpeper, Lynchburg, Poquoson, Richmond, and Fairfax, before retiring in Manassas. Catherine deeply loved people from all walks of life, her church, her home and entertaining. Her role as a preacher’s wife allowed her to fully utilize her talents sowing seeds of grace, hope, and love into the lives of others.

She was most passionate about her strong faith and relished her roles as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Providing a home, meals, comfort, and fun to her family was her greatest joy. A lifelong prayer warrior, she rose early each morning to pray for each family member individually. She enjoyed working with people and excelled as a medical receptionist for a large family practice.

In retirement, Catherine was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed serving as a Sunday morning greeter for the 8:30 service. Until this year, she rarely missed a Sunday.

Preceded in death by her parents, Knox and Goal Gibbs, and her sister, Kay Gibbs Bryant, Catherine is survived by Harold, her husband of nearly 60 years, her daughter Scarlett Barbee and husband David, her son Lee. Known as “Gigi” to her three grandchildren, Raleigh, Matthew, and Madison, she was actively involved in their lives and activities. She was a faithful friend and her memory will be cherished by several close girlfriends who were like sisters to her.

Catherine will be remembered for her life of service and willingness to put others needs above her own. She loved the Christmas season during which she entertained hundreds of church members, friends, and neighbors over the years. At the time of her death, her home was fully decorated awaiting the magic of Christmas. It is fitting that she entered into Heaven on a Sunday morning during this festive time of year.

The family will receive visitors at Grace United Methodist Church, 9750 Wellington Road, on Friday, December 8 at 10:00am, followed by a service celebrating Catherine’s life at 11:00am, with Rev. Rudy Tucker officiating. After the service, burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia. Gifts in memory of Catherine may be made to the “Light the Way” building campaign at Grace United Methodist Church.
