Obituary for John Robert Wrenn

John Robert Wrenn
John Robert Wrenn, resident of Gainesville, VA, passed away on October 23, 2017, after a brave fight against cancer. He was 56 years old. He is survived by wife, Kelly; mother, Helen Wrenn; brother, Richard (Arlene); a niece (Hayley); nephews (Ian, Jack, Ryan, Nicholas and Eli), and the more than 600 brothers and sisters in the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office family. He is predeceased by his father, Robert Wrenn. John grew up in Germany and Alexandria, Virginia, and after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Radford University, he settled back in Northern Virginia and began his career with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department in 1995.

John was a highly decorated Deputy and deeply passionate about his work, earning numerous awards in his career with the Sheriff’s Office. He was a member of Fairfax’s elite Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team and a founding member of the Sheriff’s Intelligence Unit (SIU). Most recently, John received a very prestigious Public Service Award from The United States Attorney for a multiple defendant investigation, and in true John Wrenn fashion he had to be convinced to attend the ceremony.

In further true John Wrenn fashion he served 22 years with the Sheriff’s Office, never once taking a sick day and accumulating more than 2,300 hours of sick leave. Says Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey A. Kincaid: “John loved his job and excelled in every role without seeking recognition for his many outstanding accomplishments. We thank John for his selfless efforts and the impact he had on the Sheriff’s Office family. We will deeply miss him.”

Outside of his distinguished career John was curious and a man of many interests. Though his Redskins and Capitals would test him over the years, John remained true to his teams. He was a voracious reader, studying art and history – especially Civil War history – many times with his beloved dogs at his side. John spent his life in service to create a peaceful world, and his family is comforted by knowing he has found that peace.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, October 28 from 1:00 –2:30 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia. A memorial service will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Stonewall Memory Gardens at the Manassas Battlefield, 12004 Lee Highway, Manassas, Virginia, where full honor services will be rendered. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (www.nleomf.com).
