Obituary for Robert Francis Driscoll

Robert Francis Driscoll
Robert Francis Driscoll (Bob) was born on 10 October 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, to Frank and Ruth Driscoll. He was raised in Newark, New Jersey, attending St. Rose of Lima Elementary School and Seton Hall Prep. After two years at Rutgers University, he entered the United States Military Academy and graduated in 1970. He was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. He married (Elizabeth) Diane Melvin on 20 December 1970. They had two children, David and Megan. Bob served 27 years in the military as an Engineer and a Foreign Area Officer in a variety of overseas postings, before retiring as a Colonel in 1997.

After retiring from the Army, Bob served as Dean at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College for four years and then as the Virginia Department of Transportation Resident Engineer for Maintenance for Fairfax County for 10 years. Over the course of his military and subsequent civilian careers, he mentored countless people, impressing them with his gentle but clear leadership and his commitment to those who worked for him.

Bob was a committed and humble Christian, who valued his relationship with the Lord above all else. It influenced every aspect of his life. While he was proud of his time in the military and subsequent civilian roles, he was most devoted to any service for the kingdom. Although he earned several master's degrees and his PhD, he was most proud of his master's in Biblical Counseling. As an ordained minister, he spent countless hours in prisons in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, visiting and counseling inmates, leading Bible studies and - in an age where the written word seems to be fading - writing hundreds of letters of encouragement and counsel. He was an active member of the Northern Virginia Tres Dias community and served as a Spiritual Director on many men's and women's Tres Dias weekends, as well as on weekends for Kairos Prison Ministries.

He was committed to his family. He would proudly talk to anyone about the accomplishments of his children and could not find words expressive enough for the love and delight he had for his grandchildren. He loved to be outside, enjoying nature, running marathons and riding his motorcycle.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Diane; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Michelle Driscoll and their son, Donovan; his daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Patrick Gray, and their children, Aidan, Colin, Rylan and Tristan; his brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Carol Driscoll, and many others who, though they mourn his passing, rejoice in his homecoming with his Lord.

The Memorial Service for Bob will be held this Sunday, 10 Sep, at 2:30 pm at Church of the Epiphany in Herndon. A reception will follow immediately after the service and will also be at the church. (address: 13515 Dulles Technology Drive, Suite 1 Herndon, VA 20171).

The family invites all to attend and in lieu of flowers are asking you to consider making a donation in memory of Bob to our NVTD Community which can be done by going to the quick link 'Donate to NVTD' on our webpage (nvtd.org) or via check payable to Northern Virginia Tres Dias with a note referencing in memory of Bob Driscoll. Checks can be mailed to the attention of Joni Reilly (our Financial Secretary) at 6034 Kestner Circle, Alexandria, VA 22315.
