Obituary for Elizabeth Harriet Slater

Elizabeth “Betty” Harriet (Foster) Slater, age 76, of Manassas, Virginia died after a rapid illness with pancreatic cancer on July 28, 2017 while in her home surrounded by family and friends.

Born June 21, 1941 in Hartford, Connecticut, Betty was the daughter of the late Howard Stone Foster and Elizabeth Jane (McFall) Foster. She grew up in Vermont and Red Lion, PA. After graduating from Red Lion High School and Penn State University, Betty enjoyed a career as an elementary art teacher.

She married James Robert Slater in York, PA in 1968 and while raising her family, she was very active in volunteering for the Jaycees, Young Women’s Club, and the York YWCA. Betty and Jim moved to Virginia in 1980 and Betty spent the next 37 years working at Osbourn Park High School, as a substitute teacher and a special education aide. Whether teaching students, hosting one of her legendary theme parties, or spending a Sunday evening in the studio at Manassas Clay, Betty brought creative energy into any room she entered.

Betty will be remembered by all who knew her as someone who was effervescent, joyful, unique, encouraging, fun, colorful, compassionate, generous, creative, humorous, admirable, spontaneous, inspirational and artsy.

Betty is survived by her husband Jim Slater, children Katherine Elizabeth Adame (James) of Hershey, PA and Benjamin James Slater (Angela) of Manassas, VA, sister Patricia Hajian, niece Jane Elizabeth Krovetz and 5 grandchildren: EvaMarie, Amelia, James, Charlotte, and Piper. Betty was preceded in death by her granddaughter Sarah Emmaline Adame.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia. A funeral mass will take place on Thursday, August 3, 2017, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas, Virginia.

Immediately following the church service, there will be a Celebration of Life lunch at Park West Lions Hall, 8620 Sunnygate Drive, Manassas, Virginia.

Interment will be at a later date in York, PA.
