Obituary for Madeleine Henriette DeLong

Madeleine Henriette DeLong, 85, peacefully joined her loving God on Sunday, June 25, 2017, in Warrenton, Virginia, surrounded by love ones.

She was born on June 7, 1932, in La Rochelle, France. In 1957 she came to America with her husband and son to start a new life. Starting out as a military wife in California she then had her daughter. After a few years in CA their military life relocated them to VA. In 1987, Madeleine became a United States citizen.
She supported her children as a single mother by washing people’s laundry by hand, baby-sitting, waitressing, cleaning houses and then becoming a cashier at Giant. She also volunteered with the Red Cross on blood drives. She learned the English language thru the children and by watching Captain Kang-a-Roo and Romper Room. She retired to enjoy the rest of her life with walking dogs, gardening, knitting beautiful afghans, doing word searches and visiting neighbors.

As she lived on earth, she is living in Heaven; working the gardens and caring for the animals, taking long walks and visiting with everyone. She was known for her strength, being a feisty, dedicated and loving person. Madeleine lived in the same neighborhood for 55 years and worked as a cashier at Giant for 31 years before retiring in 2005.

Madeleine is survived by her son, Paul (Jerri) DeLong; daughter, Patricia “Patsy” (Derrick) Smith; 3 Grandchildren, David (Amber), Anne (Rod) and Josh; 5 Great-Grandchildren, Brandon (Racheal), Christine (Michael), Samantha, Aubury and Dylan and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren, Kelsey, Ryliianne and Bernice. Also surviving are her sisters in France, Jeanne & Edmonde, Paul DeLong and numerous other family & friends.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Lacey Woods Park, 1200 N. George Mason Drive, Arlington, Virginia.
