Obituary for Mary E. Rodgers (Bacon)

Mary Elizabeth Bacon Rodgers, 86, of Manassas, formerly of Florida, passed away February 15, 2017 at home.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on February 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John Jesse Bacon and Helen Wilson Bacon. The family moved to Loudon, Tennessee where Mary graduated from Loudon High School, and later attended Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama. After meeting the love of her life at church, Mary married Cecil M. Rodgers, Jr. on September 4, 1954.

Cecil and Mary first lived in Germany as Cecil was enlisted in the United States Army. Upon their return from Germany, they settled in Charlotte, North Carolina and subsequently moved to Jacksonville, Florida and Plantation, Florida. Mary worked as a Teacher’s Aide for the Broward County School System, where she became famous for her laugh.

She is survived by her husband Cecil Rodgers Jr.; three sons, Cecil Milton Rodgers, III; John Charles Rodgers and his wife Mary Rodgers Jr. and James Bacon Rodgers. She is also survived by a brother, John Bacon; two nephews, William Robert Rodgers and John “Tommy “ Bacon; a niece Kathy Bacon Friton; grandchildren, James Bacon Rodgers, Jr. Christopher John Rodgers, Michael Edward Rodgers, Casey James Rodgers; and extended family members, James Bartellini; Melanie Venteluth ; Danielle Jackson; Anthony Rizzo; Shelly Cronin; and Kevin Cronin.

A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at Grace United Methodist Church on April 22 at 2:00. A reception will follow.

Memorial donations can be made towards the music program of Grace United Methodist Church. A portion of these donations will be sent to the American Alzheimer Association.
