Obituary for Laurence Ross Minton

Laurence Ross Minton
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, musician and friend; Laurence (Larry) Ross Minton peacefully passed away in the comfort of his own home surrounded by family in the early morning hours on September 12, 2016.

Larry was born on April 29, 1953 to Max and Alexandrina Minton and raised in Bronx, NY alongside his older siblings Robert and June. He developed a love for “the language of music” at an early age and played in multiple bands throughout his life (Midget Whale, Eleanor Roosevelt, At The Threshold, Cheryl and The Main Act, The Next Big Thing, Generations and more). One night while working a gig, he met the woman of his dreams, AnnMarie. He knew almost instantly that she was the love of his life and they were married on August 16th, 1985. Larry and AnnMarie were an amazing team and their love withstood the test of time.

The couple settled into a small house in Hauppauge, NY and decided to start a family. They had 3 children and both worked around the clock to ensure their family’s survival. In 1999, the Minton-Five moved to Ashburn, VA in pursuit of a better work/life balance. A four-hour commute from Northern Virginia, Larry worked during the week at NBC Studios in Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan in the sound control room for the Dateline program. He often spoke of his time there and was even presented an Emmy for his work during the 9/11 tragedy. As years passed, Larry decided to leave his position with NBC to be closer to his family. It was around this time Larry and AnnMarie hatched the idea of opening a music school; Minton’s Academy of Music, for students of all ages. The team had always dreamed of working for themselves and over a decade later, the school continues to thrive.

Larry had many passions. He loved all instruments but always excelled at the drums and vocals. He loved to teach, put on a show, and go the extra mile to help someone in need. He built things, hand-crafted tables, walls, stages, lofts, decks and more. He was a wealth of information and was always in a fabulous mood. He could light up an entire room, almost effortlessly. He loved the Yankees. He was notorious for telling “Dad Jokes” and he was absolutely hilarious. He loved spending quality time with his family and closest friends over Thanksgiving. Most importantly, he loved sharing his life with AnnMarie.

Larry is survived by his wife AnnMarie, older brother Robert, daughter Melody, sons Maxx & Alex, and grandsons Kyle, Riley & Bronx.

The family will receive on Friday, September 16th, 2016 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, VA 20110. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will be private and at a later date.
