On Thursday, January 28, 2016, Mildred Lillian Posey Ashurst slipped away to heaven. Born in Washington, DC, November 28, 1920, to Charles Henry Posey and Elsie Virginia Milstead Posey she spent most of her young life in Chicamuxen. She graduated from Nanjemoy in 1937 as co-valedictorian, then attended Strayer Business School. Her first job was for Tri-County Electric (now SMECO), and later as a court reporter in St Mary’s County. She is still remembered fondly by the little ones that she taught Sunday school at Indian Head Church of the Nazarene. This is also where she met and married a young Marine from Georgia named Emory on December 25,1941. They divorced in 1965. As a military wife, she traveled all over the US and Europe. Over the years, she worked for St Elizabeth’s Hospital in DC, the Pentagon, the Academy Construction Agency that built the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, as secretary to Base Commander at Ft Bliss, TX, and Base Commander at Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. Returning the Maryland in 1964, she again worked at St Elizabeth’s Hospital before returning to the Pentagon, where she retired in 1990 from the Defense Department as the Editor of the Defense Acquisition Regulation. She left Maryland in 1992 to settle in Manassas with her two daughters. After moving to Manassas, she went back to work, stocking shelves for the Weis Market until they closed the store. In 2004, she lost her only son, Michael to a tragic accident.

In addition to her precious son, Michael, she is predeceased by her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, William Arthur and Mary Jane Posey; brothers, Hugh Perry and Charles H Posey, Jr.; brother-in-law, Efton H Dudley; nieces, Edna Virginia Posey Acor, Judith Leah Dudley, and Rae Ann Posey Shores.

She is survived by two sisters, Annie Leah Posey Dudley of Bryantown, Md and Gladys Posey and Perry Walters of Mosselle MS; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Posey of Indian Head, Md. Also surving her are two daughters, Sharon Ashurst of Manassas and Charlotte Goodie and husband Howard, both of Manassas, VA; daughter-in-law, Trina Matthews of Laurel, MD; grandchildren, Kristan McLaughlin of East Haddam, CT, MSGT Jason and Sonia Ashurst of Gainesville, VA, Adam and Samantha Ashurst of Gainesville Va, Stephanie and Craig Jr Weil of Portsmouth, VA, Matthew Goodie of Harrisonburg, VA, and Chrissie Estep of Miami, Fl; Great grandchildren, Brittni Robinson, Lorenzo and Michael Ashurst; Addison and Sydney Ashurst; and Craig and Mildred (her namesake) Weil.

Visitation hours are Tuesday, February 9, 2016 from 6 – 8 pm and Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 10-11 a.m. A funeral service will follow the visitation on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, beginning at 11 am at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, VA 20110. There will be a graveside service to follow at 2 pm at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, Maryland.
